YB3S Team Member Emre Çetin Presented His Research at EcoMat 2025

Young Battery 3S team member Emre Çetin presented his research at EcoMat 2025, an international conference held at Istanbul Technical University’s Maçka Campus from 28 July to 1 August 2025. His presentation focused on Sb/C composite anode materials developed for sodium-ion batteries.

Organised under the theme “Materials & Technologies for a Sustainable Future,” EcoMat 2025 brought together researchers, students, entrepreneurs, industry professionals, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders working at the intersection of materials science, sustainability, and technology. The conference provided a multidisciplinary platform for scientific presentations, academic–industry discussions, professional networking, and the exchange of ideas concerning future materials and technologies.

Materials and Technologies for a Sustainable Future

EcoMat 2025 addressed several interconnected challenges, including the development of sustainable materials, energy efficiency, waste management and recycling, environmentally conscious production processes, biomaterials, and biotechnology. Its scientific programme was organised around five main symposium areas: Catalysts and Catalysis, Energy Storage, Gas/Water Management and Circular Economy, Emerging Materials and Devices for Optoelectronic Applications, and Materials for Energy and Biomedical Engineering.

The inclusion of Energy Storage as one of the main symposium areas created a relevant setting for research on emerging battery technologies. Through scientific presentations, panels, networking areas, and institutional participation, the conference aimed to strengthen communication between academia and industry while encouraging the development of more sustainable technological solutions.

Research Presentation by Emre Çetin

During the conference, Emre Çetin presented his research titled “Sb/C Composite Anode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries.” The study examined the use of antimony and hard carbon composites as anode materials, with the aim of investigating their electrochemical performance in sodium-ion batteries.

Five compositions containing different proportions of antimony and hard carbon were prepared. The materials were processed through high-energy ball milling at 30 Hz for 60 minutes, followed by electrode preparation and assembly in CR2032 coin cells. Their performance was evaluated using charge–discharge testing, cycling measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and differential capacity analysis.

Among the investigated compositions, the composite containing 25% antimony and 75% hard carbon demonstrated the strongest cycling performance, maintaining a specific capacity of approximately 300 mAh/g after 200 cycles. The differential capacity results also indicated contributions from both antimony and hard carbon to the electrochemical behaviour of the composite electrode.

The findings indicated that combining antimony with hard carbon at an appropriate ratio can help balance the capacity contribution of antimony with the cycling characteristics of the carbon component. The research was supported by TÜBİTAK Project 124M114.

Sodium-Ion Batteries and Sustainable Energy Storage

Sodium-ion batteries are being investigated as an alternative energy-storage technology, and the development of suitable electrode materials remains an important area of research. In this context, Emre Çetin’s study focused on the development and electrochemical evaluation of Sb/C composite anodes for sodium-ion battery applications.

The research brought together materials engineering, electrode preparation, microscopy, and electrochemical analysis to investigate the relationship between composite composition and battery performance. Presenting this work at EcoMat 2025 provided an opportunity to communicate research on sodium-ion battery materials within a broader scientific environment focused on sustainable materials and energy technologies.

Supporting Scientific Communication within YB3S

Emre Çetin’s participation in EcoMat 2025 represents one of the scientific contributions of a Young Battery 3S team member to an international conference. Presenting research at scientific events provides young researchers with opportunities to communicate their work, exchange ideas with researchers from different fields, and follow developments across the wider energy-storage and materials-science community.

Through participation in scientific conferences, workshops, and other research-oriented activities, Young Battery 3S continues to support the development of scientific communication and networking among young researchers working in battery technologies and related fields.
